Matt Underwood’s work reveals his intimate observation of the natural world.  As a beekeeper and keen naturalist Matt has an eye for detail yet this is expressed in free and confident composition and colour.

Born in 1971 he studied art and art history at Salisbury College of Art and Carmarthenshire College of Art.  Always drawn to nature, Matt explored various ways of working: ‘It took me time to find my voice as an artist to convey how I see the natural world.’

What he reveals is a warm and vibrant world, portrayals that chime with an experience of being at one with nature. 

Matt has exhibited his work at galleries including: Medici Gallery, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, Royal West of England Academy of Art.  He won the RSPB Fine Art Award at the 2002 Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition at The Mall Gallery in London, and the Birdwatch / Swarovski Artist of the Year 2010 Award.  He is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and is closely involved with Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF). Matt took part in three recent ANF projects including Sails, wind and meadow birds, The Great Fen, Art for the love of Sark.
